I see people wearing high waist jeans with frayed bottoms. I have an old pair of jeans that I want to try this trend with. How do I fray denim?

First, you’ll need a pair of fabric scissors, a ruler, chalk and sandpaper.

  1. First, try on your jeans because you’ll want to determine where to cut your denim.

  2. Mark one pant leg with chalk a bit above the ankle.

  3. Then remove them.

  4. Use your ruler and draw a straight line with chalk where you marked your pant leg.

  5. Use your fabric scissors to cut along that chalk line.

  6. Then, fold your jeans in half with one pant leg mirroring the other.

  7. Once both pant legs are lined up, use your chalk and ruler to draw a straight line matching the pant leg that was already cut.

  8. Cut the second pant leg along the chalk line. You’ll notice that some of the fabric strings are visible. *For more of a distressed look, take sandpaper and vigorously rub where you cut the jeans.

But if you really want an exaggerated fray…

  1. Repeat steps 1-4 above.

  2.  Then, take a raiser blade and follow the chalk line. Don’t press too firmly down on the raiser blade, as the goal is NOT to cut the pant leg off entirely. *Use with caution

  3. Turn your jeans inside out (to protect the color) and throw your jeans in the washing machine. *This will enhance the fray.

  4. Comb through the frayed fabric with your fingers.
