The dictionary defines A-Line as (of a garment) slightly flared from a narrow waist or shoulders. Meaning, any garment shape will begin to taper away from the body. For example, a skirt begins emphasizing at the waist and gradually tapers away from legs. Here is an article I found on instyle.com on "How to wear an A-Line" http://www.instyle.com/fashion/line. It also gives a few examples of what this cut looks like. Just think of the letter “A”. It starts out narrow and gradually flairs outward, same as the garment meaning.
The best body shape to wear this is an Inverted Triangle. Dresses or bottoms that flare out slightly, are ideal for balancing out broad shoulders. Here is a photo of Inverted Triangle Celebrity Cindy Crawford, that shows the emphasis on the waist, and the flare at the bottom evens out the shoulder line.
