How can I maximize my budget on quality clothes?

I really need a new wardrobe that looks more stylish and put together but I also have so many other expenses that take priority. How Can I maximize my budget on quality clothes?  - Lacey N. pinching pennies in Los Angeles.

Congratulations on taking this important step in creating a look that speaks to who you are now and who you are becoming. My first suggestion is to get clear on what your personal image goals are. Then find out what your body type is and what cuts and silhouettes will best work on you. Have fun with fashion and developing a fashion style by creating a Pinterest board filled with your ideal looks that are tailored to your body type and lifestyle.  Follow us on Pinterest to continually get inspired.

Next, identify 5 classic staples that you can purchase to begin building your wardrobe?  If your clothing needs are career oriented, I suggest a suit jacket, white button blouse, trousers, A-line dress, pullover sweater. It's a smart idea to buy these separates around the same time so you can coordinate outfits to wear immediately.

There are a ton of options for purchasing quality clothing on a budget.  Do not go into debt over fashion. Check out our Fashion Events Calendar and take along a friend to a Sample Sale.

Sample Sales are the end of season sales that retailers and brands use to push excess merchandise, sometimes held in an offsite location like a warehouse or pop up store. They are a goldmine for finding designer exclusives and style must-haves for a bargain of up to 75% off retail price. Or if you don't see your city on the list check out eventbrite.com they also list fashion events happening in most cities. The mall is where to head next. Retail is in a precarious time so there are deals to be had at better department stores. The only thing I stress to you is do not lose sight of your original goal; quality clothes on a budget.

Now, that you are ready to shop and have made it all the way to the fitting room. Be extra critical of clothing by studying the garment closely:

  • Look at fabric choice and feel. Is it durable enough for your everyday needs?
  • Does it feel good against the skin?
  • Is it well constructed and the fasteners durable and working?
  • Will it hold up over multiple uses before washing, in both presentation and function?
  • Is this a long lasting garment and how long can you expect to wear it?

Then, ask yourself questions about the Fit:

  • Does it look great on and do you absolutely love it?
  • Do the design features and benefits overall support your body shape?
  • Does it pull or pinch anywhere? Practice sitting, standing and raising your arms.
  • Is it noticeably too tight or too baggy in areas? Garments should lay smoothly across the body.

Lastly, take into account the after purchase costs:

  • Alterations and tailoring? To really get the most incredible fit most garments will need some minor alterations (remember clothing sizes are general and not at all exact). This is a wise investment for any budget.
  • Read laundry and care instructions. Dry cleaning costs could be a big expense factor over time.
  • What will you pair this with? Buy clothing in outfits that or separates that support your existing wardrobe needs. The last thing you want to do is invest in a piece that you can not wear right away.

Remember value can be in the features and benefits of the garments, not just the price. A quality garment is one that speaks to your character, image goals, looks and fits nicely.  Most importantly, a garment you enjoy wearing because it is an added confidence booster and makes you very happy.
